Ficus carica, known as the common fig is a pear-shaped fruit.
The common fig has been cultivated since ancient times and is believed to be indigenous to western Asia and to have been distributed by man throughout the Mediterranean area. The common fig-tree grows wild in dry and sunny areas, to a height of 7-10 metres.
Fresh figs are very perishable. However, once dried they can last for months.
Serving suggestions: dried figs can be eaten as snacks or dessert by themselves, or they can add an exotic flavour to your favourite recipes, such as rice dishes, salads, desserts or cakes.
